Sweet Karonda Plant
Botanically known as Carissa carandas, Sweet Karonda is an evergreen fruit-bearing shrub prized for its delicious fruits, attractive foliage and ornamental value. Native to tropical regions of Asia, particularly India, Sweet Karonda belongs to the Apocynaceae family and is widely cultivated in home gardens, orchards and landscaping. The plant features glossy, dark green leaves, thorny branches and a dense growth habit. Its fruits grow in clusters and change colour from green to pink or reddish-purple to deep purple as they mature.
Sweet Karonda is particularly appreciated for its naturally sweet taste with a mild tangy flavour. Its hardy nature, attractive appearance and fruit-bearing qualities make it a wonderful addition to home gardens.
Growing Tips
-
Sweet Karonda thrives in well-drained, fertile soil and can adapt to a wide range of soil conditions.
-
Provide full sunlight exposure for at least 6–8 hours daily to encourage healthy growth and better fruit production.
- Sweet Karonda grows well in tropical and subtropical climates and is well suited to Indian weather conditions.
-
Regular watering is essential during the initial establishment period. Once established, the plant can tolerate relatively dry conditions.
-
Avoid overwatering and waterlogging to prevent root-related problems.
-
Pruning should be carried out occasionally to remove dead or damaged branches, maintain the desired shape and encourage healthy growth.
-
Apply well-decomposed organic manure or balanced fertilizer periodically to support healthy foliage and fruit development.
