Basically, bougainvilleas are shrub-like vines, meaning they are vine-growing plants that can be shaped or trained into a shrub. It can be trained to climb trellises or be planted as an attractive but thornily impenetrable barrier, and it can also serve as a ground cover. Bougainvillea comes in a variety of colors – pink, purple, orange, yellow and white with magenta being the most common color. One of my favorite forms of Bougainvillea is called “Torch Glow”.Bougainvillea also can grow well with other plants. Pair the color of the bougainvillea flowers with the perennial plants. For purple bougainvillea select yellow perennials such as coreopsis and rudbeckia. For orange and pink bougainvillea, select blue-flowered Veronica and salvia.
