About the Plant - 

  • Coral Jasmine is Botanically known as Nyctanthes arbor-tristis from the Oleaceae family.
  • It is well known with many common names also known as Parijat, Harsingar, Tree of Sorrow, Queen of the night, is an exotic small tree or shrub with large attractive leaves and sweet-scented flowers.
  • This is considered a sacred tree in Hindu mythology, the flowers are used for Pooja. 

Facts about this Plant 

  • In Mahabharat, The mythological story shows that Parijat is a heavenly tree brought to earth by Lord Krishna and Arjun.
  • It is related that once Narada brought a flower of this tree to Dwaraka and presented it to his friend Krishna. He waited to see to which of his wives Krishna gave the flower.
  • The flower was given to Rukmini, and Narada went straight to Satyabhama and made a show of sorrow. Later Satyabhama demanded the tree be planted in the backyard of her palace.
  • It so happened that in spite of having the tree in her backyard, the flowers used to fall in the adjacent backyard of the other queen Rukmini, who was a favorite of Lord Krishna, because of her superior devotion and humility.
  • The tree is sometimes called the "tree of sorrow" because the flowers lose their brightness during the daytime.
  • A very famous temple with a Parijat tree is located in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh. This tree is believed to have been extracted from the ashes of Kunti(mother of Pandavas) and can be traced to 5,000 years is still exist even now.
  • Our Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 5, 2020, participated in a "Bhoomi Pujan" ceremony that marks the building of the Ram temple in Ayodhya. Before laying the foundation stone of the temple, PM Modi planted a Parijat sapling in the temple premises.

INITIAL CARE FOR 10-15 DAYS JUST AFTER RECEIVING YOUR PLANT 

  1. Remove the Packaging Materials carefully.
  2. Press the soil in the pot & add additional soil(garden mix) if necessary.
  3. Maintain moisture in the pot, Do not overwater it may kill your plant, so make sure that the soil should be dry between watering.
  4. Make sure that plants get enough morning direct bright light(2-3hrs) for 10-15 days & do not go for immediate transplanting (minimum 1 month)
  5. After 1 month you can transplant it into a slightly bigger pot than the present pot or you can remain in the same pot for 6-7 months.
  6. Just prune if any branch of the plant is get damaged in transits. New leaves will come definitely.
